Bamboo has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Asian cultures such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In these traditions, various parts of the bamboo plant—such as bamboo shoots, leaves, and resin (known as "tabasheer" or "bamboo silica")—have been used to address gastrointestinal ailments, including ulcers. The rationale behind this usage is largely based on the cooling, demulcent, and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to bamboo, which are believed to soothe the digestive tract and promote healing. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is minimal. A handful of in vitro and animal studies suggest that bamboo extracts may possess antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory activities, which could theoretically benefit ulcer healing, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. No large-scale, peer-reviewed clinical trials have established the efficacy or safety of bamboo for treating ulcers. Therefore, while bamboo's use for ulcers is justified by tradition, and there are plausible mechanistic hypotheses, modern evidence is limited and not robust enough to recommend bamboo as a primary or adjunctive therapy for ulcers.
