C-Phycocyanin, a pigment-protein complex derived from Spirulina and other cyanobacteria, has been explored for its potential protective effects against ulcers, particularly gastric ulcers. The scientific evidence supporting its use is largely preclinical, with most data coming from animal studies. Research has demonstrated that C-Phycocyanin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties. In rodent models, administration of C-Phycocyanin has been shown to reduce the formation and severity of gastric ulcers induced by agents such as ethanol, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and stress. These protective effects are thought to be mediated by scavenging of free radicals, reduction of gastric mucosal inflammation, and enhancement of endogenous antioxidant enzyme activities (such as superoxide dismutase and catalase).
For example, a study published in Phytotherapy Research (2005) found that C-Phycocyanin significantly reduced ethanol-induced gastric ulceration in rats, with histological evidence of mucosal protection. Another study in Indian Journal of Experimental Biology (2006) reported similar findings with NSAID-induced ulcers. However, it is important to note that there is a lack of robust clinical data in humans; no large-scale randomized controlled trials have been conducted to confirm these effects in ulcer patients. Thus, while there is promising scientific rationale and preclinical evidence, the clinical relevance and efficacy of C-Phycocyanin for ulcer prevention or treatment in humans remain unproven.
