Chiococca alba, commonly known as David's milkberry or West Indian milkberry, has a history of use in traditional medicine in the Caribbean, Central, and South America. Its roots and other parts are often used as decoctions or teas for a variety of ailments, including ulcers. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional healers report its use as a remedy for gastric issues, including peptic and gastric ulcers. The rationale for its use is largely based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, as well as general beliefs in its ability to promote gastrointestinal healing.
However, the evidence base supporting its use is weak. There are a handful of laboratory studies indicating that extracts of Chiococca alba may possess antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, but direct studies on anti-ulcer activity—especially in human or animal ulcer models—are scant or absent. No high-quality clinical trials have validated its efficacy for treating ulcers. The rating of 2 reflects that while there is a consistent tradition of use and some plausible pharmacological activities (e.g., antioxidant effects), scientific validation for its anti-ulcer effects is limited and indirect.
