Evidence supporting the use of: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
For the health condition: Ulcers
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the principal catechin in green tea, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting or treating ulcers, particularly gastric ulcers. Scientific interest primarily stems from EGCG's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Several preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) indicate that EGCG may help protect gastric mucosa by inhibiting oxidative stress, reducing inflammation, and suppressing the growth of Helicobacter pylori—a bacterium closely linked to peptic ulcer disease. For example, animal studies have shown that EGCG administration can decrease ulcer formation, reduce gastric acid secretion, and enhance healing via modulation of inflammatory cytokines and upregulation of protective gastric factors.
However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. While laboratory and animal studies are promising, few well-designed human trials have confirmed EGCG’s efficacy for ulcer prevention or treatment. Some small-scale clinical studies suggest a modest benefit, mainly attributed to green tea consumption rather than isolated EGCG supplementation. Additionally, concerns about potential gastrointestinal irritation at high doses of EGCG have been noted.
In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary data supporting EGCG’s potential role in ulcer management, the evidence is mostly preclinical or indirect. Large, controlled human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Therefore, EGCG use for ulcers is supported by scientific evidence, but the strength of that evidence is currently limited.
