Geraniol, a monoterpenoid alcohol found in essential oils such as citronella, rose, and lemongrass, has been investigated for its potential gastroprotective effects, including support in ulcer prevention and treatment. Several preclinical studies in animal models have shown that geraniol can reduce the severity of gastric ulcers induced by ethanol, NSAIDs, and stress. The proposed mechanisms include its antioxidant properties, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, enhancement of mucosal defense, and anti-inflammatory effects.
For instance, a 2013 study published in "Chemico-Biological Interactions" demonstrated that geraniol administration in rats significantly reduced the area of ethanol-induced gastric lesions, likely through decreased lipid peroxidation and increased levels of protective gastric mucus. Another study in "Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology" (2015) found similar protective effects and suggested that geraniol modulates cytokine production and nitric oxide pathways.
However, despite promising experimental data, clinical studies in humans are lacking. There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend geraniol as a treatment for ulcers in clinical practice. Most of the supportive data come from animal and in vitro studies, and there are no well-established guidelines or large-scale human trials. Thus, while scientific interest exists and some supportive preclinical evidence is present, the overall level of evidence remains low.
