Isoliquiritigenin is a flavonoid derived from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza species), which has a long history in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal complaints, including ulcers. However, isoliquiritigenin itself has been the subject of some modern scientific investigation for its anti-ulcer potential. Several in vivo studies using animal models (mainly rodents) have demonstrated that isoliquiritigenin can reduce gastric ulcer formation induced by agents such as ethanol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The proposed mechanisms include antioxidative effects, enhancement of mucosal defense, inhibition of gastric acid secretion, and anti-inflammatory activity. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Phytotherapy Research) has shown that isoliquiritigenin reduces oxidative stress markers and inflammatory cytokine levels in gastric tissues, contributing to mucosal protection.
Despite these promising preclinical results, there is a lack of robust clinical (human) studies directly evaluating isoliquiritigenin for ulcer treatment or prevention. Most available data are limited to laboratory and animal research. Therefore, while there is scientific investigation supporting its potential, the evidence remains preliminary, and its use is not yet validated by high-quality human trials. Based on current knowledge, isoliquiritigenin's use for ulcers is supported by early scientific research, but additional clinical studies are necessary to establish efficacy and safety in humans.
