The rationale for using L. brevis in this context stems from its general probiotic properties, such as the ability to balance gut microbiota, inhibit pathogenic bacteria, and modulate immune responses in the gastrointestinal tract. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain strains of L. brevis can suppress the growth of Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium primarily responsible for peptic ulcers, and may contribute to mucosal protection through the production of antimicrobial substances and enhancement of mucosal barrier function.
However, direct high-quality clinical evidence in humans specifically supporting the use of L. brevis for treating or preventing ulcers is limited.
