Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lactobacillus plantarum has been investigated for its potential to support or treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, particularly those associated with Helicobacter pylori infection. Scientific studies, including several animal experiments and a limited number of human clinical trials, suggest that L. plantarum may exert beneficial effects in ulcer management. Proposed mechanisms include the inhibition of H. pylori colonization, enhancement of mucosal barrier function, modulation of the immune response, and production of antimicrobial substances such as lactic acid and bacteriocins. These effects may reduce inflammation and promote ulcer healing.

A 2014 randomized clinical trial published in Helicobacter found that a combination of probiotics including L. plantarum improved eradication rates of H. pylori and reduced gastrointestinal side effects compared to standard therapy alone. Animal studies, such as a 2012 study in rats published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences, demonstrated accelerated healing of gastric ulcers with L. plantarum supplementation. However, while these results are promising, the quality and quantity of human research remain moderate, with most trials using probiotic mixtures rather than L. plantarum alone.

In summary, there is scientific evidence supporting the potential role of Lactobacillus plantarum in ulcer management, but it is not yet robust or conclusive. More high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and establish optimal dosing protocols.
