Sulforaphane glucosinolate, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables (especially broccoli sprouts), has been investigated for its potential to support or treat ulcers, particularly those caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. The scientific rationale centers on sulforaphane's ability to induce phase II detoxification enzymes and, importantly, its antibacterial activity against H. pylori, a primary cause of gastric ulcers. Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that sulforaphane can inhibit the growth of H. pylori, even antibiotic-resistant strains, and reduce gastric inflammation and mucosal damage.
Human trials, though limited in number and sample size, provide some evidence for efficacy. For example, a notable study published in 2009 (Yanaka et al.) showed that daily consumption of broccoli sprouts significantly reduced markers of H. pylori colonization and gastric inflammation in infected individuals. However, eradication rates were modest and sulforaphane is not considered a substitute for conventional antibiotic therapy. Other studies have reported similar findings, with improvements in gastric health markers but without consistent ulcer healing or full eradication of infection.
In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence (rating: 3 out of 5) supporting the use of sulforaphane glucosinolate as an adjunctive nutritional approach for ulcers related to H. pylori. While it may help reduce bacterial load and inflammation, it should not be relied upon as a sole treatment. More robust and larger human trials are needed to fully validate its clinical efficacy for ulcer therapy.
