Evidence supporting the use of: Whey protein
For the health condition: Ulcers
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Whey protein has been investigated for its potential supportive role in managing ulcers, particularly gastric and peptic ulcers. The scientific rationale is based on its rich content of bioactive peptides and amino acids, including cysteine, which is a precursor for glutathione—an important cellular antioxidant. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that whey protein may help protect the gastric mucosa by enhancing antioxidant defenses, modulating inflammation, and supporting tissue repair. For example, research in rodent models has shown that supplementation with whey protein can reduce ulcer formation and promote healing, likely through its effects on oxidative stress and mucosal regeneration (PubMed 22193741). Additionally, whey protein has been shown to stimulate the production of glutathione, which may help protect stomach lining cells from damage caused by excess gastric acid or NSAIDs. However, clinical evidence in humans is limited. There are few, if any, high-quality randomized controlled trials evaluating the direct effect of whey protein supplementation on ulcer healing in humans. Most of the supportive data are preclinical or extrapolated from studies on wound healing or general gastrointestinal health. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific mechanism and some early-stage evidence, the overall support for whey protein as a treatment or adjunct for ulcers in humans is currently weak, meriting a score of 2.
