Celery (Apium graveolens) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for supporting urinary health. In various cultures, especially within traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, celery seeds and extracts have been used as a diuretic—substances believed to promote urine production and support kidney function. Historical texts and herbal compendia often cite celery for its purported ability to help "flush out" the urinary tract, reduce water retention, and support the elimination of waste.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional claims is limited. A few laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds found in celery, such as phthalides and flavonoids, may have mild diuretic effects. Human clinical trials are sparse and generally lack rigorous controls or large sample sizes. The majority of available studies focus on celery's potential roles in blood pressure management or antioxidant effects rather than direct urinary system support.
