Ophiopogon root (Ophiopogon japonicus), also known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used based on traditional principles rather than robust scientific validation for urinary system support. In TCM, ophiopogon root is believed to "nourish yin," moisten dryness, and clear heat, which indirectly supports the urinary system by promoting fluid balance and reducing symptoms such as dryness or irritation often associated with urinary discomfort. Historical texts note its use for conditions like frequent urination, dry mouth, and irritability, which are interpreted as signs of "yin deficiency."

However, modern scientific research specifically investigating ophiopogon root’s effects on the urinary system is limited and inconclusive. Most available studies focus on its roles in respiratory and cardiovascular health, with some evidence of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials demonstrating direct benefits for urinary tract health, such as preventing urinary tract infections, supporting kidney function, or improving bladder health. Thus, its use for the urinary system remains rooted in traditional practice, with limited scientific backing. Overall, while ophiopogon root is widely used in Asian herbal medicine for urinary and other systemic support, its efficacy for urinary system health is not strongly supported by contemporary biomedical research.
