Evidence supporting the use of: Pointed gourd
For the body system: Urinary System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine in South Asia, for supporting the urinary system. Its use is primarily based on its diuretic properties, which are believed to help increase urine output and assist in the management of urinary disorders such as urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Traditional practitioners often recommend pointed gourd for its cooling effect on the body and its ability to “cleanse” the urinary tract.
Scientific studies on pointed gourd’s direct effects on the urinary system are limited. Some phytochemical analyses indicate that the vegetable contains saponins, flavonoids, and other compounds with potential diuretic and anti-inflammatory activity, but robust clinical trials or mechanistic studies are lacking. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional uses, with only preliminary animal studies suggesting mild diuretic effects. Thus, while pointed gourd is traditionally used to support the urinary system, scientific validation is still insufficient.
