Trailing Arbutus (Epigaea repens) has a long history of traditional use among Native American tribes and early North American settlers as a remedy to support the urinary system. It was commonly used as a diuretic and to help soothe urinary tract irritations, such as cystitis and gravel (kidney stones). Historical herbal texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries describe its use in teas or tinctures for "urinary affections" and as a "mild demulcent and diuretic."

However, there is little to no modern scientific research validating these traditional uses. No well-designed clinical studies have evaluated the efficacy or safety of Trailing Arbutus for urinary health, and it is largely absent from contemporary herbal pharmacopeias and medical literature. While traditional records indicate its use for urinary complaints, these are based on anecdotal and empirical knowledge rather than rigorous scientific evidence. As such, its reputation as a urinary support herb remains primarily grounded in historical usage, and it should be approached with caution due to the lack of current safety and efficacy data.
