Varuna (Crataeva nurvala) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for supporting the urinary system. In Ayurveda, Varuna is typically used to help manage conditions like urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and difficulties with urination. Historical texts describe Varuna as a diuretic and litholytic (stone-dissolving) herb, which is believed to help flush out the urinary tract and support kidney health. Preparations of Varuna bark or root are commonly included in traditional formulations aimed at promoting urinary tract health and addressing urinary discomfort.

Scientific research on Varuna is limited, but a few small studies and animal experiments suggest that extracts of Crataeva nurvala may have antiurolithic (preventing stone formation), diuretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. For example, some animal studies have shown that Varuna extracts can reduce the formation of kidney stones and may help dissolve certain types of urinary calculi. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal. Thus, while Varuna’s use for urinary support is well established in traditional medicine, scientific validation is modest and not yet conclusive.
