Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aerva lanata, commonly known as mountain knotgrass or "polpala," has a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine across India and Southeast Asia. It is frequently used as a diuretic and for the management of urinary tract ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and dysuria. The traditional rationale is based on its believed properties to "cool" the urinary system, increase urine output, and help clear obstructions.

Scientific research on Aerva lanata is limited, but some preclinical studies have shown mild antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against certain urinary pathogens and diuretic effects in animal models. However, these findings are preliminary, lack robust clinical trials in humans, and the mechanisms are not well understood. Thus, the evidence supporting its use for treating or supporting UTIs is largely anecdotal and traditional, with very limited scientific validation at present. Its use persists mainly due to historical practice rather than strong scientific confirmation.
