Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Amaranthus tricolor, commonly known as Joseph's coat, is traditionally used in various cultures as a leafy vegetable and for its purported medicinal properties. In some traditional medicine systems—particularly in parts of Asia—Amaranthus species, including A. tricolor, have been used to treat a range of ailments, including urinary tract conditions. The use for urinary tract infections (UTIs) is primarily based on traditional knowledge, where decoctions or infusions of the leaves are consumed with the belief that they help promote urination or "cleanse" the urinary tract. However, there is limited documentation specifically focused on A. tricolor for UTIs, and much of the traditional use is generalized across the Amaranthus genus.

Scientific research on A. tricolor is limited with respect to urinary tract infections. While some studies have identified antimicrobial properties in extracts of Amaranthus species, there is currently insufficient direct scientific evidence demonstrating efficacy specifically against the pathogens responsible for UTIs, such as Escherichia coli. Therefore, the use of A. tricolor for urinary tract infections remains primarily grounded in traditional practices, with little to no robust clinical validation.
