Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting urinary tract health, primarily due to its high content of polyphenols, particularly proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins. These compounds are thought to inhibit the adhesion of Escherichia coli bacteria to the urinary tract epithelium, a mechanism similar to that proposed for cranberries. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that Aronia extracts can reduce bacterial adhesion; however, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited.

One small pilot study (Valcheva-Kuzmanova et al., 2018) suggested that Aronia juice might reduce recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women, but the study's sample size and design limit the strength of the conclusions. A few other trials and reviews have referenced the anti-adhesive and anti-inflammatory potential of Aronia, but robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking.

In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific basis—mainly extrapolated from mechanistic and small clinical studies—for the use of Aronia melanocarpa in UTI prevention, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is currently low. More high-quality human research is needed to firmly establish efficacy and optimal use for this indication.
