Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Asparagus adscendens, commonly known as Shatavari in Ayurvedic medicine (though this name is more often associated with Asparagus racemosus), has been traditionally used in South Asian herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including urinary tract conditions. Historical records and ethnobotanical studies indicate its use as a diuretic and for supporting urinary health. The roots of Asparagus adscendens are believed to have soothing properties and have been employed in folk remedies to alleviate symptoms such as burning urination and inflammation associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs).

However, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for UTIs is limited. There are few studies specifically investigating Asparagus adscendens for this indication. Most available evidence is either anecdotal or derived from its traditional usage. Some phytochemical analyses indicate the presence of saponins, flavonoids, and other compounds that could theoretically contribute to anti-inflammatory or mild antimicrobial effects, but clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while its use is well-documented in traditional medicine, modern scientific validation remains sparse, and the evidence base is best characterized as weak to modest (rating: 2/5).
