Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Asparagus racemosus—commonly known as Shatavari—has a longstanding history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is traditionally employed to support urinary tract health and alleviate symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Historical texts and traditional practitioners describe its cooling, diuretic, and soothing properties, suggesting its utility in reducing burning sensations during urination and promoting urine flow. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, scientific validation is limited. A handful of animal and in vitro studies suggest potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Asparagus racemosus root extracts, which could theoretically help with UTIs, but these findings are preliminary and not directly applicable to human UTI management. There are very few, if any, robust clinical trials in humans evaluating its efficacy specifically for UTIs. As such, while the use of Asparagus racemosus for urinary health is grounded in tradition, current scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating or preventing UTIs is weak. More rigorous human studies are needed to substantiate these traditional claims.
