Evidence supporting the use of: Bacillus subtilis
For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacillus subtilis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for various health benefits, including its possible role in supporting or treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). The scientific evidence supporting its use for UTIs is limited but not nonexistent. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that B. subtilis can inhibit the growth of uropathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli by producing antimicrobial compounds and by competitive exclusion in the urogenital tract. For example, research has shown that certain strains of B. subtilis can disrupt biofilms formed by uropathogens, which are often implicated in recurrent UTIs.
Small clinical studies and case reports, primarily from Eastern Europe and Asia, have suggested that oral or intravaginal administration of B. subtilis may reduce UTI recurrence, especially in women with chronic or recurrent infections. However, these studies are often limited by small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and variable probiotic formulations. Comprehensive, high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans are lacking, and major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend B. subtilis as a standard treatment or prevention for UTIs.
In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting a possible beneficial role for Bacillus subtilis in UTI management, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low. More rigorous clinical trials are needed to validate its efficacy and safety for this indication.
