Rating (out of 5): 2

Bael (Aegle marmelos) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where it is employed for a variety of ailments, including digestive complaints and urinary tract issues. In these traditions, Bael fruit, leaves, and roots have been used as diuretics and for their purported antimicrobial properties to help support urinary tract health and address infections. Ancient texts and ethnobotanical sources often mention Bael as a remedy for “mutrakricchra” (painful urination) and other urinary conditions, attributing its benefits to its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and purifying effects.

However, while there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting that extracts of Bael may possess antibacterial properties, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in humans is lacking. Available research is limited, often preliminary, and not focused on UTIs. Most support for using Bael in this context is therefore based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. In summary, Bael’s use for UTIs is primarily justified by traditional practices, with limited and indirect scientific support.
