Black gram (Vigna mungo), also known as urad dal, has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of health conditions, including urinary tract health. In Ayurveda, black gram is sometimes recommended as part of formulations (such as decoctions or pastes) aimed at promoting diuresis, relieving burning micturition, or addressing urinary discomfort. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its supposed nourishing, cooling, and demulcent properties, which are thought to soothe irritated urinary passages and support overall urinary function.

However, scientific validation for these uses is minimal. There are no robust clinical trials or peer-reviewed studies that confirm the efficacy of black gram in the prevention or treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Available scientific literature on black gram focuses more on its nutritional value, antioxidant activity, and general health benefits. Any antimicrobial properties observed in laboratory studies have not been specifically linked to urinary tract pathogens or validated in human subjects for this condition.

Therefore, while black gram is traditionally used in some cultures for urinary complaints, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for UTIs is weak and largely anecdotal. Its use for this purpose should not be considered a substitute for proven medical therapies, especially in the case of acute or recurrent infections.
