Carambola (Averrhoa carambola), commonly known as starfruit, has been used in traditional medicine systems in various Asian countries, including India, China, and the Philippines. In these systems, different parts of the carambola plant—such as the fruit, leaves, and roots—have been employed as herbal remedies for a range of ailments, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Traditional uses are primarily based on the fruit's diuretic properties, believed to help flush out the urinary tract and thus alleviate symptoms or reduce the risk of infection. However, the majority of scientific research has focused on carambola’s antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro or in animal models, with only limited exploration regarding its direct effects on UTIs in humans. Some studies have demonstrated mild antibacterial activity of carambola extracts against certain pathogens, but these results are preliminary and not specific to the context of UTIs. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or epidemiological evidence supporting its efficacy or safety for this specific health condition. Therefore, while carambola has a foundation in traditional medicine for urinary complaints, scientific validation for its use in treating or preventing UTIs remains limited.
