Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) has been used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for a variety of ailments, including urinary tract conditions. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys describe cardamom as a diuretic and as an agent for supporting urinary health. The seeds and pods have been used in decoctions or infusions believed to relieve burning micturition and urinary discomfort, likely due to their aromatic and mildly anti-inflammatory properties. However, while these traditional uses are documented, there is minimal scientific research specifically investigating cardamom's efficacy in treating or preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Few laboratory studies suggest that cardamom has antimicrobial properties, but these have not been directly linked to UTI-causing pathogens or tested in clinical settings for this purpose. No randomized controlled trials or robust clinical evidence currently support the use of cardamom for UTIs. Thus, its use is primarily justified by tradition, and the scientific evidence remains weak.
