Evidence supporting the use of: Cloudberry
For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) has a historical record of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Scandinavian and Arctic regions, for a variety of ailments, including urinary tract health. Folk medicine references suggest that cloudberry leaves and fruits were sometimes used as diuretics or for alleviating symptoms associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, there is very limited modern scientific research validating its efficacy specifically for UTIs. The purported benefits are mainly attributed to the high content of vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants in cloudberries, which theoretically could contribute to urinary tract health by inhibiting bacterial growth or supporting immune function. Despite these theoretical mechanisms, direct clinical evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of cloudberry for treating or preventing UTIs is lacking. Most of the available information about its use comes from ethnobotanical sources and traditional herbal practices rather than controlled scientific studies. Therefore, while cloudberry has a traditional basis for use in urinary tract support, this is not currently substantiated by robust scientific evidence.
