Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Garlic pear (Crateva religiosa), also known as sacred garlic pear or temple plant, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda, for urinary tract health. In traditional Indian practices, the bark and sometimes the leaves and roots of Crateva religiosa are used to manage urinary disorders, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, and bladder problems. The plant is believed to possess diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) properties, which may help alleviate UTI symptoms and promote urinary tract health.

However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is primarily anecdotal and based on ethnobotanical use. A few preliminary laboratory studies suggest that extracts of Crateva religiosa may exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these studies are limited, and clinical trials in humans for UTI specifically are lacking. As such, while the use of garlic pear for urinary tract infections is well-grounded in tradition, there is insufficient scientific evidence to confirm its effectiveness for this purpose. Thus, it remains a remedy supported by traditional use rather than robust scientific validation.
