Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Gou Qi Zi." Traditionally, it has been used to nourish the liver and kidneys, improve vision, and support longevity. In the context of urinary tract infections (UTIs), goji berry is sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at supporting kidney and urinary health, though it is not considered a primary remedy for UTIs specifically. Most of the historical evidence is based on its general tonic properties and its ability to "clear heat" and support bodily fluids, which can be loosely associated with urinary symptoms in TCM theory. There is currently little direct scientific evidence to suggest that goji berry has antibacterial properties against common UTI pathogens, or that it specifically prevents or treats UTIs in clinical settings. Some laboratory studies have indicated that goji berries have antioxidant and immune-boosting effects, but these findings have not been directly linked to efficacy in the treatment of urinary tract infections. As such, the use of goji berry for UTIs is primarily justified by tradition and is not strongly supported by modern clinical research.
