Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Graviola (Annona muricata), also known as soursop, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Africa. In these cultures, various parts of the plant—including leaves, fruit, and bark—have been used for a range of ailments, including fever, pain, infections, and specifically urinary tract discomfort or infections. The traditional belief is that Graviola possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically help address urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is minimal. Only a handful of in vitro studies have suggested that extracts of Graviola exhibit some antimicrobial effects against certain bacteria, but there is a lack of robust clinical studies or trials directly examining its efficacy for UTIs in humans. No health authorities or major clinical guidelines recognize Graviola as an effective or recommended treatment for UTIs. Thus, its use for urinary tract infections is primarily based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation, and the evidence supporting it is weak.
