Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani. Its bark, flowers, and other parts have been used for a variety of health conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Traditional texts describe Kachnar as having antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties, which may contribute to its use in supporting urinary health and addressing infections of the urinary tract. However, the scientific evidence specifically validating Kachnar’s efficacy for UTIs is limited. While a few in vitro and animal studies have suggested antimicrobial activity of Bauhinia variegata extracts against certain pathogens, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating clear benefit for UTIs. The traditional use is based on empirical evidence and theoretical benefits described in classical Ayurvedic texts, rather than modern clinical validation. Therefore, while Kachnar continues to be included in some herbal formulations for urinary tract support in traditional medicine, its use for UTIs is primarily justified by traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific proof.
