Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Loranthus, commonly known as mistletoe (specifically, species such as Loranthus ferrugineus), has been traditionally used in several traditional medicinal systems across Asia and Africa. Its use for urinary tract infections (UTIs) is primarily derived from ethnobotanical reports and folk medicine, where it is believed to possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific validation for its efficacy in treating UTIs is very limited. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from Loranthus species possess antibacterial activity against a range of pathogens, but these studies often do not specifically include common UTI-causing bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Furthermore, there is a lack of clinical trials in humans supporting its effectiveness for UTIs. Most available evidence comes from traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific investigation. Therefore, while the use of Loranthus for urinary tract infections is justified by traditional use, the quality and quantity of supporting scientific evidence are minimal, and its clinical efficacy for UTIs remains unsubstantiated.
