Melon, particularly species such as Cucumis melo (muskmelon or cantaloupe), has been used in various traditional medicine systems to help support urinary tract health and relieve symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, melon seeds and flesh are sometimes recommended for their perceived cooling, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties are believed to promote urination and help flush out toxins or irritants from the urinary system, which may provide symptomatic relief in mild urinary discomfort or irritation.

However, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of melon or its extracts in treating or preventing UTIs are extremely limited. Some research suggests that melon seeds contain antioxidants and mild diuretic compounds, but there is little to no clinical evidence that these effects translate into a meaningful reduction in UTI risk or severity. The use of melon for UTIs persists primarily as a traditional practice, rooted in the general belief that increased fluid intake (including water-rich fruits like melon) helps "cleanse" the urinary tract. While eating melon is healthy and hydrating, it should not be relied upon as a primary or sole treatment for UTIs, especially since untreated UTIs can lead to serious complications. Modern medical treatment with antibiotics remains the standard of care.
