Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Methyl arbutin is a glycoside derivative similar to arbutin, a compound historically derived from the bearberry plant (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). For centuries, bearberry leaves have been used in traditional herbal medicine to support urinary tract health, primarily for urinary tract infections (UTIs). The traditional use is largely based on the plant’s historical reputation and anecdotal evidence rather than on high-quality modern clinical trials. Arbutin, and by extension methyl arbutin, is believed to exert its effect after being hydrolyzed in the body to hydroquinone, which has mild antiseptic properties in the urinary tract. However, there are few, if any, direct studies on methyl arbutin itself in the context of UTIs; most research focuses on arbutin or whole plant extracts.

Scientific validation for the efficacy of arbutin or its derivatives for UTI treatment is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest an antibacterial effect, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Regulatory authorities and systematic reviews generally do not endorse methyl arbutin or arbutin for UTI treatment due to insufficient evidence. Thus, the current support for methyl arbutin’s use in UTIs is rooted in tradition rather than conclusive scientific validation.
