Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mineral water is sometimes recommended as a supportive measure in the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), primarily due to its role in increasing fluid intake. Scientific consensus agrees that staying well-hydrated helps dilute urine and promotes more frequent urination, which can assist in flushing bacteria from the urinary tract. This is a supportive approach and not a direct treatment for infection. There is evidence from clinical guidelines that increased fluid intake reduces the risk of recurrent UTIs, particularly in women, but the type of water (mineral vs. tap) has not been shown to provide additional antibacterial benefits. Some mineral waters contain higher levels of bicarbonate or other minerals, which may alter urinary pH; however, robust clinical trials demonstrating that mineral water specifically reduces UTI frequency or severity are lacking. The main validated benefit is related to overall hydration rather than any unique property of mineral water itself. Therefore, while the recommendation has a scientific basis in terms of hydration, the evidence is moderate and not specific to mineral water’s mineral content.
