Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Mung bean (Vigna radiata) has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. In these traditions, mung beans are often regarded as a "cooling" food and are believed to help clear "heat" and support the body during conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) or inflammation. Some traditional remedies recommend mung bean soup or decoctions as part of dietary therapy for symptoms like burning urination or urinary discomfort, which are interpreted as signs of excess "heat" in the bladder or urinary tract. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence to support the efficacy of mung bean in treating or preventing UTIs. Most of the support for its use is anecdotal or based on theoretical frameworks within traditional medicine rather than modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies. Preclinical research has shown that mung beans contain antioxidants and may have anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings do not specifically validate their use for UTIs. Therefore, while mung bean is traditionally used in some cultures for urinary tract health, current scientific evidence is minimal and does not substantiate its effectiveness for this condition.
