Evidence supporting the use of: Myoviridae
For the health condition: Urinary Tract Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Myoviridae is a family of bacteriophages—viruses that infect and lyse bacteria. The use of bacteriophages, including those from the Myoviridae family, for treating bacterial infections such as Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) is supported by a growing body of scientific research, particularly due to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Several in vitro studies and limited clinical case reports have shown that Myoviridae phages can effectively target and lyse uropathogenic Escherichia coli and other bacteria implicated in UTIs. Some early-phase clinical trials and compassionate-use cases have reported reductions in bacterial load and improvement in symptoms when phage therapy was used, particularly in patients with multidrug-resistant infections where standard antibiotic treatments failed.
However, large-scale randomized controlled trials are still lacking, and regulatory approval for routine clinical use remains limited in most countries. The available evidence, while promising, is not yet robust enough for broad clinical endorsement, hence the rating of 3 out of 5. Ongoing research is aimed at optimizing phage selection, delivery methods, and understanding potential resistance mechanisms. In summary, the use of Myoviridae phages for UTIs is scientifically grounded, with moderate but not yet definitive evidence supporting efficacy and safety.
