Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ophiopogon root (Ophiopogon japonicus), known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used historically for various health conditions, primarily for nourishing yin, moistening the lungs, and promoting fluid production. In TCM, it is sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at treating symptoms associated with urinary tract discomfort or dryness, though it is not a primary herb for acute urinary tract infections (UTIs). Its traditional use for urinary health is more related to moistening and soothing irritated tissues rather than exhibiting direct antimicrobial activity.

There is limited scientific research directly investigating ophiopogon root for the treatment or prevention of UTIs. Most available studies focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically support urinary tract health indirectly by reducing inflammation. However, no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies have established its efficacy specifically for UTIs. Thus, its use for this condition remains based on traditional practice rather than modern scientific evidence. The evidence rating is 2, as case reports and traditional texts support its adjunctive use, but rigorous clinical validation is lacking.
