Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pata de Vaca (Bauhinia forficata) is a medicinal plant native to South America, particularly Brazil, and has a long history of use in folk medicine. Its primary traditional uses are for diabetes and as a diuretic. The rationale for its use in urinary tract infections (UTIs) is based on its diuretic properties, which are believed in traditional medicine to help "flush out" the urinary tract and potentially reduce microbial load. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for treating or preventing UTIs. Most pharmacological studies on Pata de Vaca have focused on its hypoglycemic (blood sugar-lowering) activity, antioxidant properties, and general diuretic effects. There are few, if any, clinical or even preclinical studies that directly assess its impact on urinary tract pathogens or UTI outcomes. Therefore, while its use for UTI support is rooted in traditional herbal medicine practices—primarily due to its diuretic action—there is little to no scientific validation specifically for this indication. The evidence for its use in UTIs is therefore weak, and it should not be relied upon as a primary or sole treatment for urinary tract infections.
