Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phellodendron bark (from Phellodendron amurense, also known as Amur cork tree) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, often in formulas targeting "damp-heat" conditions, which includes infections of the urinary tract. In TCM, the bark is believed to clear heat, dry dampness, and resolve toxicity, making it a common component in herbal blends for symptoms consistent with urinary tract infections (UTIs), such as burning urination and frequent urination. However, the modern scientific evidence to support its effectiveness for UTIs is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that Phellodendron bark contains compounds (such as berberine) with antimicrobial activity, but there is a lack of well-designed clinical trials directly investigating its efficacy for UTIs in humans. Most of the rationale for its use in urinary tract conditions is therefore grounded in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. While the antimicrobial properties are promising, more research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this specific indication.
