Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pubescent Angelica, also known as Angelica pubescens (commonly called Du Huo in Traditional Chinese Medicine), is traditionally used in East Asian herbal medicine primarily for the treatment of rheumatic conditions, pain, and inflammation. However, there is a minor historical precedent for its use in addressing urinary tract health, including some formulations for urinary tract infections (UTIs), though this is not its principal application. The traditional rationale is generally based on the herb’s ability to dispel wind and dampness and its purported diuretic effect, which could, in theory, support urinary elimination and help in the management of UTIs by promoting urination and thus flushing the urinary tract. Scientific validation for this specific use is scant; most modern research on Angelica pubescens focuses on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties rather than direct antimicrobial or anti-infective effects relevant to UTIs. Comprehensive reviews and pharmacological studies rarely mention efficacy or active compounds targeting urinary pathogens. Therefore, while there is some traditional basis for its inclusion in multi-herb formulas for urinary complaints, the evidence is weak and indirect, with little to no direct clinical or laboratory validation for its effectiveness against urinary tract infections.
