Pumpkinseed oil has been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in Europe, for supporting urinary tract health. Historical and folk medicine sources suggest its use for relieving symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and sometimes for general urinary tract comfort. However, its use specifically for urinary tract infections (UTIs) is not well-documented in scientific literature nor extensively referenced in traditional herbal medicine compared to other conditions. The oil contains phytosterols and essential fatty acids, which have been proposed to have anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, but direct antibacterial action against pathogens causing UTIs has not been convincingly demonstrated in controlled studies.

A few small clinical studies and animal models have explored pumpkinseed oil’s effects on bladder function and urinary symptoms, particularly in the context of overactive bladder or prostate health, but not specifically UTIs. There is a lack of high-quality, randomized controlled trials evaluating pumpkinseed oil for the prevention or treatment of UTIs in humans. Therefore, while traditional use exists for general urinary health, there is minimal supportive evidence for its efficacy in treating or preventing urinary tract infections specifically. For UTIs, evidence-based therapies such as antibiotics remain the standard of care.
