Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) has a history of use in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Siddha, where it is sometimes employed for its purported cooling, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties. In these traditions, it has been used as a supportive remedy for conditions affecting the urinary tract, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the rationale is based primarily on empirical use and the general belief that Red Sandalwood helps reduce heat and irritation in the body, rather than on rigorous scientific investigation.

Despite its traditional application, there is a lack of robust clinical data or modern pharmacological studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Red Sandalwood in the treatment or prevention of UTIs. Some in vitro studies have indicated that extracts of Pterocarpus santalinus possess broad-spectrum antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, but these findings have not been directly linked to clinical outcomes in UTI management. Therefore, while traditional use exists, scientific validation for this specific indication is minimal, and the evidence level is low.
