Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rosa laevigata, commonly known as the Cherokee rose, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for urinary tract-related symptoms, such as frequent urination, enuresis, and leukorrhea. The dried fruit of Rosa laevigata is known as "Jin Ying Zi" in TCM and is traditionally used to astringe leakage and consolidate essence, which, in TCM theory, helps to manage various forms of urinary incontinence and excessive urination. However, the traditional indications are more related to "astringing essence" and managing chronic or deficiency-type urinary leakage, rather than treating acute urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by pathogens.

There is little robust scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Rosa laevigata for the treatment of bacterial UTIs. Some studies report that extracts of the fruit possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings are preliminary and often conducted in vitro or in animal models. No high-quality clinical trials have established efficacy for this indication. Therefore, while its use in urinary conditions is well-established in traditional practice, scientific validation specifically for UTIs is lacking. The evidence rating reflects the presence of traditional use but the absence of strong scientific support for this particular condition.
