Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Shilajit is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of health conditions, including urinary tract disorders and infections. Historical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita mention Shilajit as a "rasayana" (rejuvenator) and advocate its use for improving urinary function, alleviating dysuria (painful urination), and supporting kidney and bladder health. The rationale in traditional practice is based on its purported diuretic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory actions, believed to help clear toxins and support urinary tract health.

However, direct scientific validation for the use of Shilajit specifically in urinary tract infections (UTIs) is limited. While some studies have demonstrated general antimicrobial activity of Shilajit extracts in vitro, there is insufficient clinical or animal research directly assessing its efficacy against the pathogens most commonly responsible for UTIs, such as Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus saprophyticus. Moreover, there are no well-controlled human trials evaluating Shilajit's benefit in treating or preventing UTIs.

In summary, the use of Shilajit for urinary tract infections is primarily justified by traditional Ayurvedic practices, with very limited modern scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for this specific condition.
