Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Taraxol is a triterpenoid compound found in dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) and is one of several phytochemicals present in the plant. The use of dandelion in traditional medicine for urinary tract conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), is well-documented, particularly in European and Asian herbal practices. Dandelion root and leaves were commonly used as a “diuretic,” to promote urination and supposedly help flush out the urinary tract. This traditional use is the primary basis for supporting dandelion (and thus taraxol-containing preparations) in urinary tract health. However, the specific role of taraxol itself is not well-established, and there is little direct scientific evidence linking taraxol or dandelion extracts to the prevention or treatment of UTIs. Most available studies focus on the general diuretic effect of dandelion and not on its efficacy in treating infections. No high-quality clinical trials support its use for UTIs, and scientific reviews consistently conclude that more research is needed. In summary, the use of taraxol for UTIs is justified mainly by tradition, not robust scientific evidence, and any effect is likely due to the whole plant’s diuretic action rather than taraxol specifically.
