Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Tribuloside is a flavonoid glycoside isolated from the plant Tribulus terrestris, which has a long history of traditional use in various medicinal systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Tribulus terrestris is historically used for a range of urogenital conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney and bladder disorders, and as a diuretic. The traditional use is based on the belief that the plant can help clear urinary tract obstructions, reduce inflammation, and promote urine flow. However, most of this evidence is anecdotal or rooted in historical texts rather than based on modern clinical trials.

From a scientific perspective, only limited preclinical studies have explored the antimicrobial, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from Tribulus terrestris as a whole, not specifically tribuloside. Some in vitro studies suggest potential antibacterial activity against pathogens implicated in UTIs, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There are no high-quality, large-scale clinical trials that validate the efficacy of tribuloside or even Tribulus terrestris extracts for the treatment or prevention of UTIs. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific substantiation remains weak, leading to a low evidence rating.
