Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vasicine, an alkaloid found in the plant Adhatoda vasica (Malabar nut), has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, primarily for its bronchodilator and expectorant properties in treating respiratory ailments such as asthma and bronchitis. Its use in supporting or treating urinary tract infections (UTIs), however, is not prominent in the scientific literature. Some traditional systems have included Adhatoda vasica extracts in polyherbal formulations aimed at genitourinary complaints, suggesting a historical precedent for its use in this context. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for UTIs is limited to anecdotal or ethnobotanical reports rather than rigorous clinical or preclinical studies. Scientific investigations into vasicine have occasionally noted general antimicrobial activity, but there is no robust evidence specifically validating its efficacy against common uropathogens or its clinical benefits in UTI management. Therefore, the justification for using vasicine in UTIs is primarily traditional, with very weak supporting evidence, and its use should be approached with caution in the absence of better data.
