Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aerva lanata, commonly known as mountain knotgrass or "polpala," is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional systems of medicine to support urinary health and alleviate symptoms such as burning or painful urination (dysuria). In Ayurveda, the plant is considered a diuretic and is frequently included in formulations for “mutrakrichra” (urinary disorders). Ethnobotanical surveys across India and Sri Lanka report its widespread use for promoting urine flow, reducing irritation, and managing kidney stones or gravel that may cause burning sensations. The traditional preparations include decoctions, infusions, and powders from the leaves or whole plant. Scientific studies on Aerva lanata are limited and mostly preclinical. A few animal studies suggest its aqueous extracts may increase urine output and exert mild anti-inflammatory effects, which could theoretically help relieve burning urination. Some in vitro studies also report antimicrobial effects against urinary pathogens, offering a possible rationale for its traditional use. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the exact active constituents responsible for these effects remain unclear. Thus, while traditional use is well-established and supported by ethnomedicinal literature, modern scientific validation is still limited, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
