For the health condition: Urination (burning or painful)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Palo Azul (Eysenhardtia polystachya) has a long history of use in traditional Mexican and Central American herbal medicine, particularly for urinary tract discomfort, including burning or painful urination (dysuria). Folk medicine practitioners have used infusions or teas made from the bark or wood to help with various urinary problems, attributing its effects to purported diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical ethnobotanical records describe its use in treating kidney problems, bladder irritation, and urinary tract infections.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting Palo Azul for the relief of painful urination is limited. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest mild anti-inflammatory and diuretic actions, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The traditional use is likely based on observed symptomatic relief and diuresis, which may help flush irritants from the urinary tract. Despite its popularity in herbalism, current biomedical literature does not strongly validate these effects. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and there is some weak pharmacological rationale, the evidence remains modest and largely anecdotal.
