Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Agnoside is an iridoid glycoside compound primarily found in the plant Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chaste tree or chasteberry. The use of Vitex agnus-castus to support the uterus and female reproductive health has a long history in traditional medicine, especially within European herbal practices. Traditionally, extracts of this plant have been used to address menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and other female reproductive complaints. The presumed activity is often attributed to the whole spectrum of phytochemicals in the plant, not agnoside alone, and is believed to act via modulation of pituitary hormones, particularly prolactin.

While some clinical studies suggest that Vitex agnus-castus extracts may be beneficial for certain gynecological concerns, there is limited direct scientific research specifically on agnoside as an isolated compound for uterine support. Most supporting evidence is based on traditional usage and studies on whole plant extracts rather than on agnoside itself. Therefore, the justification for using agnoside to support the uterus is primarily rooted in tradition, with a moderate level of evidence (rating 2) due to the lack of direct, high-quality studies on the isolated compound.
